Rotaciones en Resistencia, 2017.
I interviewed David K. Adams, a meteorologist working at UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), on the formation and structure of tornados. Inspired by the idea of the rhizome and autopoiesis, I was interested in these systems of rotation in relationship to the Suffi whirling derviches. Investigating the similarities between a scientific system and a mystical system that focuses on "turning," I constructed five instruction-poems appropriating the meteorologist's words from the interview, as if tornados "spoke", giving instructions to the human body on how to rotate. These instruction-poems were the basis for the performance Rotations on Resistance.
I invited three dancers to read and discuss these poems and ideas. Through a series of conversations and readings, but without previous physical rehearsals, the performance happened in a field near Pachuca, Hidalgo. I mapped out a diagram to represent a multivortex tornado. The dancers were located 500 meters away from each other in the landscape, but were turning at the same time. I wanted the turns to be a real action of resistance, a ritual that would alter their time and space perception by doing a repetitive action based on our previous discussions, the rhythm of the poems, the words of the meteorologist. The final moment of the piece was a video installation, where the viewer could experience the tension of the tornado, the rhizome, the autopoiesis.
